This autumn – at least in the Northeast – has been the kind you dream of. It feels like the dog days never left us, not even now in the beginning of October. Heck, most areas haven’t even had a frost yet – a bummer for seasonal allergy sufferers but a boon to fashionistas like myself who just can’t bring herself to put the short and flirty dresses and gladiator sandals to the back of the closet until spring.

The only problem? It IS Fall…and the temperature follows suit as soon as the sun goes down (earlier and earlier every day, I might add). So, what are the most practical and fashionable trends of right now to help get you through the warm days and cooler evenings with style?

Transitional JustHave #1: Tights. Whether they’re solid (orange and blue are huge hues right now – extra exciting for this Syracuse alum), plaid or leopard (two of the hottest pattern trends for Fall 2014) tights (and even leggings) endure as a great day-to-evening accessory. Not only do they help keep your gams warm, they can completely transform an outfit. The best part: they roll up into a handbag like a dream.

Transitional JustHave #2: Wrap Coat. The wrap coat was a staple of the Fall runway preview shows, and with a three-quarter length sleeve you can get a lot more mileage during the Fall and even into the early winter. For now, you can keep things cool by layering over a sleeveless blouse and leaning into the colder months, wrap coats layer effortlessly over long-sleeves turtlenecks and sweaters.

Transitional Just Have #3: The Midiskirt. Not quite short and not quite long, the midiskirt hits at about mid shin, allowing for a summery feel when paired with a cute pair of ballet flats or a peep-toe kitten heel – but, with just the quick addition of some tights and menswear inspired Oxfords (another huge trend for the Fall and Winter), suddenly it’s cozy and autumn-chic.

Transitional JustHave #4: A Shearling Scarf. The Shearling is a major cold-weather staple, and plays heavily in the fall and winter lines of BCBG, Tommy Hilfiger and more…but…it’s not quite time yet for a full on shearling lined jacket. So what about a shearling scarf? It’s cute, soft, and suggestive of the fall that’s to come but it won’t completely stifle you during the warm and sunny days we’ll hopefully see plenty of for the next month or so.

Transitional JustHave #5: Wool Knits. Yes, I said wool. Not only is it one of the most popular textiles for Fall (thanks to Stella McCartney and Marc Jacobs) – did you know wool is actually an incredibly breathable and adaptable fabric? Sure, it’s cozy and pretty much synonymous with cooler weather, but wool can also be incredibly useful during this transition. I’m not going to suggest a big and bulky wool sweater, but a delicate wool knit sweater dress can comfortably carry you through a temperate fall day. Add a few of the JustHaves above at dusk and you’ll be warm and fashionable until dawn. (Extra tip: heather grey is the must-have wool hue of now)
